Petersaysdenim Invasion Tour: Malaysia

Petersaysdenim is a denim brand that started out in 2005 as a project by Peter Firmansyah who at that time didn't know that his brand will go across the world - United States, Canada, Indonesia, Singapore and now Malaysia. This brand focuses on producing premium quality denim products mainly jeans, as well as t-shirts and accessories (wallets, passport holder, key chains, bracelets, bags, etc...).
Coming out from shopping city Bandung, Indonesia, the brand is inspired by music and of course fashion. It's rarely separated from either one of its counterparts.

PSD has gained a lot of faithful customers all over the world and is now making its mark here in Malaysia. Kicking it off with a tour, with original PSD band, 'Rocket Rockers' headlining tour which will hit Singapore, Philippines and the rest of South East Asia beginning with Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This tour will not only feature the headliners but 7 local PSD Malaysia bands (An Honest Mistake, Tres Empre, I Revival, Massacre Conspiracy, Incarnation, Cassandra and DJ Nas-T) and 2 invited guests (The Padangs and Dead Eyes Glow).

The Malaysian leg will be held at Blackbox @ MAPS KL on 30th of October 2011 at 3pm. The best part of this show is that it is COMPLETELY FREE. This is in support of the local music scene as well as to promote the brand here. A booth will be set up for customers to purchase the new Fall/Winter 2011 line of products. Peter himself will be present so it would be a good time to meet with the man behind it all.

The sponsors for this concert are 'The Guitar Store' for backline (ddrums, ENGL and Smarvo amps), 'The Wasch' the official online store that carries PSD, 'Hai' an Indonesian online magazine, 'Lucky Peter Tattoo' and 'PSD Records'.

Hey guys! It's been awhile since I've posted stuff on the blog.
We've been using so much of Facebook (which works) but I've decided to put the blog to good use too.

Danny's coming back tonight from Canberra. It's been a silent first half of the year without him.
Danny is an amazing violinist and guitarist. His ideas are wicked.
We just can't wait to write his violin parts for the new songs.

Just so you know, we're currently finalizing the parts of the new songs. We've recorded some demos about 3 weeks ago and I must say that I'm quite stoked about what we've done with some of the songs. I assure you that they are more 'sing-a-long-ish' and the hardcore ones are a lot heavier. Good balance of pop and hardcore I would say.

Anyways, more on recording soon.

To all our fans and friends, we would like to make an official announcement that we have amicably parted ways with our long-serving drummer, Kevin Theng. Kevin has chosen to focus on his career path as a sessionist. As much as it pains us to say goodbye, we want to wish him all the best in everything he does in the future!

I often consulted Kevin in making any decisions with the band or for the band. We talked about writing, gigs, direction – everything. He was the person I needed to get affirmation from. I had to run everything by him first. He often shared his thoughts and they were very wise. He’s also drummed for many local giants like Bittersweet, Dina, Altimet, James Baum & Hannah Tan which makes him a star in his own right.

From March 2008, we’ve played so many shows near and far and the journey has been great. Thailand and Singapore, a Peninsula Tour,2 nominations, an award, 2 music videos, an album, a million pictures – all these things will be written in our memory forever.

Kevin, I’d like to thank you for being such a huge part of the band. I’ve learned so much from you and you’ve made me into a better musician and person. I know you are going to do well in the future and you will always be a star!

On a lighter note, we would like to officially announce that Jone Yeoh will be joining us as our new drummer. We have been writing new material together and it has been good so far!

We hope you continue to give us your fullest support! Go Dino-Warriors! RAWR!

Here's a review from Jordan Milano, a new friend from Bangkok, about our show at Wongen Kafe.

The date was October 30th, 2010, and I hadn't seen a live show in months. It was a big night for me, because even though I had never heard the bands before, I knew that I was ready for a dose of live music. I had no idea what to expect, yet I was eager to see what the bands had in store.

I watched from the balcony of the second floor as the crowd in WonGen Cafe started to grow. It was finally seven o clock, time for the music to begin. After Emmi, the founder of WonGen, welcomed everyone, Phil took the stage.

Chaba, a four piece act based in Thailand, pumped through their set with good energy, and a massive vocal range considering that all four members were girls. Although the majority of the songs were in Thai, the end of their set included a fantastic cover of Avril Lavigne's "My Happy Ending", as well as a pop-rock version of Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance."

As they finished up I prepared for the headlining band, An Honest Mistake. Based out of Malaysia, the six piece band took the stage and immediately came alive. They opened with a bang, including a melodic breakdown with synchronized body banging from the guitarists. Front man Darren, brought the crowd to life with a nice guitar swing as Baldwin punched out an impressive solo on the keys. After a few high energy songs, drummer Kevin, bassist (other) Kevin, and lead guitarist Leonard left the stage for a softer song played in a near acoustic style. As the heart felt vocals of Darren and Sheryl brought that song to a close, the entire band returned to the stage for the grand finale. They shot back to maximum volume with a few more songs where Darren tested the limits of the human voice with his screams, both high and low. The crowd clapped and cheered their way to the end of the show, and made sure to chant "Xīk h̄nụ̀ng phelng," which translates as "One More Song."

All in the the night was not only a cure for withdrawals from live music, but also a night of discovery. I had no idea that an all female pop band from Thailand could jam like that, and I was blatantly shocked at the performance put on by the Malaysian pop-punk unit. I would highly suggest checking either band out on myspace if your ears need a fresh sound.

Hi everyone!
It's been awhile since I last posted something really personal.
Fear not, today's entry is quite personal.

'I thank my lucky star for an encounter with my daughter's idol!'
A very caring mother said this to me yesterday over Facebook.
I was flattered. Indeed I was.
You don't get to hear something like that everyday.
The mother of a 19 year old girl said that she is interested in getting to know the people in her daughter's life. The things that are surrounding her.
I was so happy to know that there are parents who genuinely take interest in their children.
I have heard of horror stories of neglect and such.

After speaking to Miss S, it dawned upon me that we are more than just musicians, we are leaders. We are role models.

This is not an attempt to blow our own trumpets and it's not in any way arrogant but very humbling instead that our music and our lives were able to impact someone's life. An idol. Never thought I'd be one.

I was encouraged.

We went on talking about the regular stuff; what we did and how things were.
I told Miss S about how awesome her daughter and her team was organizing Segi College's Malaysian-LAH Campaign. I had to let her know that her daughter is amazing. A report in a way. A compliment.
I wanted her to be proud of her daughter. I'm sure she was.

She went on saying how much of an impact her recently deceased mother was in her life and now she wants to be that for her daughter as well. I was even more encouraged. She really wanted to know what her daughter was into and said tht she will try to listen to 'loud music' even though she may not like it entirely. Just to connect even at a deeper level.

I explained that An Honest Mistake is not just a band. We are about the music. We are also about the people. We want to make friends. We want to develop a community of people who can relate and identify with us. By doing so, they also become a part of An Honest Mistake. It's no longer the 6 of us. It's you and me. Everyone that has been sticking with us and new ones that will stick with us. Together, WE ARE AN HONEST MISTAKE.

'Very noble of you' was her reply. I'd like to include everyone when doing something. If you are a photographer, videographer, graphic artist, music producer, dancer, hair designer, clothes designer...whatever you are, we welcome you to be a part of us.

We've great friends like Bryan Lim, Zlwin Chew, Ewin Ee & Baldwin Chua; just to name a few that play a big part in our band.

For parents who are reading this, I encourage you to be a part of your child's life. To know your child inside out. Trying to get into what they are into wouldn't hurt. I'm sure you were all teens once. Get to know their friends. Know what they are doing. Develop that trust. Trust is what teens lack nowadays. Trust towards parents that is. Some poeple choose to trust their friends more than anything else. Parents play a heavier role. We need future heroes. No more delinquents. Be interested in what your children are. Talk to them. Reason with them.

In all honesty, I am not an expert. I may be generalizing but I know for sure that our parents are all very supportive of what we do.

Sheryl, our latest member of the band has tremendous support from her father. Their relationship is so close that we do not have to worry about her not being able to tour or play shows. We've had to send her home really late a couple of times and her dad was so cool about it and asked 'Wanna go have supper ah?' at 2am. For a 17 year old girl to join 5 other guys on tour all of a sudden is something very unusual. How can a parent handle such a situation?
Simple - TRUST.

All our parents know what we are doing and they are very proud of us. They push us to be better children and to be better people. We know they love us and we love them too.

Therefore, I conclude this post with this TRUST IS THE BASIS OF EVERY RELATIONSHIP. IT NEEDS TO BE EARNED AND DEVELOPED. YOU SIMPLY CANNOT DEMAND FOR IT.

Friends we will be playing Monash Uni on 17th of April.
If any of you guys are from there, stick around for the show.
This is an extreme sport event and it's gonna be pretty cool.
We will be playing alongside good friends Rosevelt, Ask Me Again, Jin, Bus Company, Prema Yin and many more.

We bring games such as paintball, rock climbing, zorbing, dodgeball, foosball and batting cages directly to the campus grounds for YOU!

In conjunction with the event and in the spirits of healthy competition, we will have a paintball and dodgeball tournament where winners will be rewarded with attractive prizes. So, if you have a competitive side in you or are just seeking to show everyone how awesome you are, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?! Form your teams and register A.S.A.P. Elevate Tour 2010

Hey everyone!
It has been uber busy for the band.
March I would say was the busiest month for AHM.
It's a good thing. We're all stoked that things are moving really quickly.

The Elevate Tour 2010.
We kicked off the tour at Batu Pahat last Sunday.
The drive was about 3 hours long.
The show was next to Batu Pahat Mall.
We did an acoustic set and I thought it was really good.
Then we went in to the main stage. Just before we got on stage, it poured.
It's so weird because it was the same thing during Rock The World.
When the rain died down, we went up on stage and nailed it.
It was fun and quick.
However, we had to leave immediately. I would have stayed.
Amazing bands like Love Me Butch, The Times, Bittersweet, Robot Asmara and 40 winks were all after us. Too bad we missed them. But hey, there are 4 more stops.
It's 6am and I'm not in my most poetic mode.

Sunway Pyramid goes green

EARTH Hour is back and for the second year in a row, Sunway Pyramid is going green.

Every last Saturday of March, the world around celebrates Earth, an international cause against climate change.

With the earth experiencing global warming such as rise in temperature and sea levels, drought, famine and changing landscape, this climate awareness campaign serves as a significant reminder to the community about the challenges faced.

Our support: Last year’s Earth Hour in Sunway Pyramid.

Sunway Pyramid is all out in educating the public and invites all to be a part of this event.

For just an hour, beginning at 8.30pm, the shopping mall joins the rest of the world in switching off its lights.

Doing so will effectively reduce electricity usage hence, lesser greenhouse gas emission – one of the main causes of climate change.

“Even though it is a highly participated campaign, in reality, it is still just a small effort to reverse climate change,” said Sunway Pyramid chief operating officer Kevin Tan.

“There’s so much more that needs to be done.

“What is of importance right now is getting the crowd’s attention and mobilising them to make a stance against this issue,” Tan added.

“We are finding ways to engage the public in taking this cause seriously. Local celebrities such as Daphne Iking, Xandria Ooi and Chermaine Poo will be making their appearances at the event.

As a special treat to all music lovers, Earth Hour at Sunway Pyramid will also feature ‘Battle of the Bands’, in collaboration with the Leo Club of Tropicana.

Ten bands from various colleges in the Klang Valley will battle it out to see who tops the table at the Orange Entrance.

‘An Honest Mistake’ will be making a guest appearance during the night while performances by the students of Sunway University and Kolej Damansara Utama and ‘Stack Me Up’ game by Tupperware are aplenty.

Over the past few months, we have been adjusting to the changes in the band.
I like the fact that Danny is also a guitarist. Whenever I feel like just singing, he can definitely cover for me.

Apart from that, I realized that sometimes in the darkest of nights, there's a brighter light.

Band Aid For Haiti!

We will be playing the Band Aid for Haiti this Saturday at 310pm!
Our good friends Car Crash Hearts will also be there which means our drummer would have to double duty.
I am excited to be a part of the 'relief' effort for the victims in Haiti. It's amazing how music can bring people together to support a cause. I really hope that the money that will be raised from this campaign will be able to aid the victims. I truly hope that it will all end soon.

Hi guys! As some of you may have already heard that Eve Oh is no longer part of An Honest Mistake. Joel Dass had also left prior to Eve's departure.

We are proud to announce that we have recruited a new member of the band, KEVIN TAN.
He will be our new bassist from now onwards. He is awesome and will be performing with us at our next show which is UCSI's UNIFEST 2010!

Just some updates from the studio:
We have laid down the guitars and drums for 2 songs.
We will be laying down the rest this week. Vocals and bass.
Violins will be tonight!

2 more songs next week and we will have an album!
I think it's gonna be awesome.

JANUARI lalu, dunia 'digegarkan' dengan berita menyayat hati apabila satu gempa bumi kuat menggoncangkan ibu negara Haiti sehingga mengorbankan ratusan ribu nyawa.

Bagi Haiti, dengan apa yang berlaku, bantuan daripada pihak luar amatlah diperlukan sama ada berbentuk kewangan atau misi kemanusiaan.

Bekalan perubatan asas seperti antibiotik serta ubat penahan sakit sudah semakin berkurangan dan ia menjadi igauan buruk buat golongan doktor yang bergelut merawat mangsa bencana.

Justeru, atas dasar simpati terhadap malang yang menimpa negara Caribbean itu, portal muzik 2Crank.com dengan kerjasama Persatuan Karyawan Malaysia (Karyawan) bergabung tenaga bagi mengutip dana yang bakal disalurkan kepada Tabung Pembangunan Haiti.

Band Aid For Haiti akan berlangsung 6 Mac nanti di Laundry Bar, The Curve, Mutiara Damansara, dengan gabungan artis baru dan lama antaranya Johny Comes Lately, Zul King, Cynosure, An Honest Mistake, Maya Karin, Aizat, Amylea AF, Iqwal, Radhi OAG, Republic Of Brickfield dan Saturnine.

Konsert secara percuma itu turut mengharapkan sumbangan pengunjung untuk bersama menghulurkan bantuan kepada mangsa gempa bumi di Haiti.

Menurut Presiden Karyawan, Datuk Freddie Fernandez, konsert berkenaan itu mendapat sokongan penuh daripada pihak UNICEF dan Mercy Malaysia.

Jelasnya, beberapa badan swasta juga telah menunjukkan tanda sokongan untuk menjayakan konsert tersebut seperti Bentley Music, Genting Berhad, Red Bull termasuk Laundry Bar sendiri sebagai penaja lokasi.

"Badan swasta dan korporat lain turut dijemput untuk bersama menjayakan program ini yang mana mereka boleh menaja setiap artis yang bakal membuat persembahan.

"Sumbangan bermula dari RM3,000. Kesemua sumbangan akan disalurkan terus kepada Tabung Pembangunan Haiti melalui UNICEF dan Mercy Malaysia.

"Band Aid For Haiti bukan hanya sebuah konsert tetapi sebagai menunjukkan keprihatinan kita kepada mereka yang dilanda malang,'' katanya ketika ditemui sejurus selesai majlis pelancaran konsert Band Aid For Haiti di Laundry Bar, baru-baru ini.

Ujar Freddie, di sudut artis pula, Band Aid For Haiti juga memperlihatkan betapa golongan artis tidak terkecuali untuk bersama masyarakat dalam kerja-kerja amal.

Ditanya mengenai kerjasama antara Karyawan dan 2Crank.com, Freddie berkata ia bermula dua minggu lalu.

'An Honest Mistake' Agresif Di Pentas

An Honest Mistake bakal rakam lagu Melayu

JARANG sekali kita dengar kumpulan muzik indie dari kalangan anak muda berbangsa Tiong Hua, tetapi perkara itu bukan lagi asing apabila mengenali kumpulan An Honest Mistake.

Kemunculan kumpulan yang dianggotai oleh lima jejaka dan seorang gadis itu sebenarnya sudah dua tahun mula aktif dalam bidang muzik.

Kumpulan An Honest Mistake dianggotai Darren Teh, 23, (vokalis dan pemain gitar), Kevin Tan, 19, (pemain bass), Danny New, 21, (pemain biola), Kevin Theng, (Pemain drum), Leonard Chua, (pemain gitar utama).

Biarpun berbangsa Cina, namun kumpulan ini hanya mempertaruhkan lagu-lagu versi bahasa Inggeris dan turut berhasrat untuk mencipta lagu dalam versi bahasa Melayu suatu hari nanti.

"Buat masa ini, semua lagu-lagu kami berbahasa Inggeris, belum terfikir lagi untuk mencipta lagu Bahasa Mandarin.

"Tapi kami juga ada merancang untuk hasilkan lagu dalam bahasa Melayu," kata Darren, yang bekerja sebagai pensyarah di Universiti Lim Kok Wing.

Walaupun menyedari hakikat penerimaan muzik tempatan yang semakin perlahan, namun Darren dan kumpulannya tetap nekad dengan perjuangan mereka untuk memartabatkan muzik berkonsepkan pop sebagai memeriahkan industri muzik tanah air.

"Memang sekarang orang kita lebih suka dengan muzik luar, tapi disebabkan kami memang minat dengan muzik tersebut, saya tidak sesekali bimbang dengan situasi itu.

"Saya tidak kisah, jika ikutkan hati mahu sahaja cetak dalam ke semua jenis cakera padat termasuk kaset.

Bertindak agresif merupakan cara mereka dikenali.

"Konsep muzik yang dibawa kami buat masa ini semuanya pop, tapi mungkin kami akan cuba pula muzik rap untuk masa hadapan," ujar pensyarah muda itu.

Selain bergelar artis, namun kesemua anak-anak muda itu mempunyai kerjaya lain dan menganggap bidang nyanyian adalah antara cara mereka mencari hiburan di samping minat yang mendalam terhadap bidang tersebut.

Walaupun sibuk dengan tugasan seharian, namun Darren selaku ketua kumpulannya, tetap memastikan mereka selalu membuat latihan di samping memenuhi masa lapang.

"Selepas pukul lima petang, saya akan ke studio '12records' di Subang Jaya, di sana kami akan praktik bersama.

"Kami terpengaruh dengan muzik yang dibawa oleh kumpulan 'Broken scar', tapi kami ada cara tersendiri. Buat masa ini, kami sudah mempunyai 10 buah lagu," katanya.

Antara lagu mereka yang sudah diputar di radio adalah 'This Song Is So Random, I Don't Know Why' dan 'The Snake With limbs.

"Mungkin dengar lagu kami itu agak pelik, tapi itu adalah antara simbol untuk mengenali kumpulan kami.

"Selain itu, kumpulan kami juga akan bertindak agresif semasa mengadakan persembahan selain menampilkan penyanyi perempuan sebagai tarikan," ujarnya sambil ketawa.

Say Gong Xi! Gong Xi!

It’s the Year of the Tiger and Sunday Metro goes on the prowl to find out how celebrities and personalities spend their new year.

CHINESE New Year is often associated with noise, the good kind, of course. The loud bursts of fire crackers (despite the fact that the practice is banned), the clash of cymbals and sonorous beat of the drums accompanying the lion dances, and everyone wishing each other “Gong Xi Fa Cai” all add up to the cacophony of sounds that is the celebration of the festive occasion.

Home boy: Michael Wong has never celebrated Chinese New Year anywhere except Ipoh .

Ipoh-born singer, composer and actor Michael Wong, who is based in Taiwan, sums up this yeet lau mood pretty well.

“It’s a fantastic time that I love because everything is so ‘happy’. Happy songs, happy colours, happy people everywhere.”

Wong, who is best known for his hit single, Tong Hua (Fairy Tale), has never celebrated Chinese New Year anywhere except Ipoh where he gets to be with his nephews and nieces and they help him to forget about work!

For Sino-Kadazan Roger Wang, a solo acoustic guitarist based in Kota Kinabalu, the important thing is to spend this auspicious occasion with loved ones.

Chinese New Year has always been about family and relatives for Wang. Hence, he wants his his three-year-old daughter to meet everyone in the extended family.

Of course, the new year is also synonymous with food and a time to tuck in his mother’s Hakka cuisine, especially her sumptious kau yook, which is steamed pork belly with yam.

As Wang was born in the year of the Tiger, he is confident that all his efforts will mirror the courage, power and authority of this animal. For celebrity cook Agnes Chang, “going home” means travelling from her base in Kuala Lumpur to Singapore to be with her 85-year-old mother, her three grown children and six grandchildren for 10 days.

To let her put up her feet and not slave over the stove, her children will be treating her to a grand reunion dinner in a restaurant. But there is no keeping this chef from her wok and the doting mum will endeavour to cook all her children’s favourite dishes during her stay in Singapore. Among her signature dishes are stuffed oysters and Chinese cabbage soup with abalone and seafood.

At home: Agnes Chang (top) will be with her 85-year-old mother, her three grown children and six grandchildren in Singapore.

She says during Chinese New Year, she always remembers her late mother-in-law, a Teochew.

“She never failed to say ‘sin chia ju yee’ (which means peace and success throughout the year) when I served her tea on the first day of Chinese New Year,” Chang recalls. “In reply, I would say ‘tang tang ju yee’ which reciprocates the greeting.”

However, not everyone will be joining their families for the reunion dinner.

Hannah Tan, singer-songwriter and TV personality, will be one of those who will be missing out on her ang pau collection. This year, Tan will be in Tokyo for work. As the Japanese Government does not recognise Chinese New Year as a public holiday, it will be a working day for her. But being the tech savvy chick that she is, Tan will be extending her Chinese New Year wishes to her family in Kuching via Skype.

Zhang Zhi Chen (Z-Chen), the Malaysian singer who is based in Taiwan, is not as upbeat as Tan when it comes to celebrating Chinese New Year away from home.

Recalling the time when he had to do a few shows in Taipei during Chinese New Year five years ago, he says: “It was weird because it was filled with emptiness and loneliness.”

For Zhang, who is Fish Leong’s cousin, there will be no joy without his mother’s special yong tau fu and mahjong with his family.

Victor Tseng, the representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia, says he will not be going back to Taiwan and his two daughters will not be joining him for the reunion dinner here.

But he will nevertheless be kept busy making his round of visits to official functions and open houses in Malaysia.

Due to the nature of his job as a diplomat, spending Chinese New Year away from home is common. Considering that Taiwan is just a short four-and-a-half-hour flight away from here, Tseng says that his trips home are frequent enough throughout the rest of the year.

Naturally, Tseng has plenty of interesting tales to tell of his Chinese New Year experiences in foreign lands. In New York, for example, he was asked to make a lion head “come alive”. This is done by dotting the lion’s head with red vermillion and saying “Tien Lei Ti Tung”, a prayer which seeks the favour of the God of Thunder to stabilise the earth. It was an elaborate ceremony which saw two lion dance schools pitting their skills against each other and the paper shreds from the exploding firecrackers formed an inch-thick carpet on the streets. Later, Tseng found out that the organiser was the head of a Chinese triad!

Danny New, the violinist for the band It’s An Honest Mistake, which won the Voize Independent Music Award 2010 for the Best College Act, remembers a childhood which had been largely spent overseas. While in the United States and Thailand, New, whose father is a banker, made many Asian friends and had a gala time watching lion dances in city parades, having lou sang house parties, lighting firecrackers and doing the usual round of visiting.

As Chinese New Year also falls on Valentine’s day this year, some will be opting for a double celebration. Leonard Chuah, the lead guitarist of the band, says he plans to send his girlfriend Mandarin oranges shaped in a bouquet complete with an ang pau (from his parents, of course) in Seremban.

Malaccan-born Lim She Ting, the NTV 7 Mandarin news reader, will be expecting her fiancé to bring her a take-away of fried rice with abalone on New Year’s Eve as she will be working over Chinese New Year. This year will be extra poignant for her as it will be the last time she is receiving ang pau. To find out who the lucky beau is, catch her on The Breakfast Show tomorrow at 8.30am on 8TV.

In line with the festive mood and the Chinese tradition of uttering “auspicious words”, Danielle Dai, the host of Women’s Zone on NTV 7, is counting on her son’s ability to master a few choice phrases.

She hopes to get her 15-month-old son to wish the family “Gong Xi, Gong Xi” this year. He will be dressed in his new gold and red Chinese suit, she says, adding that she has been coaching him in preparation for visits to her friends’ homes in Kuala Lumpur.

For Kuala Pilah-born Fish Leong, who is the Queen of Love Songs to fans in Taiwan, Hong Kong, China and Singapore, this will be her first Chinese New Year as a married woman.

Leong, who tied the knot with Tony Zhao on Feb 1 in the Philippines, has this message for her fans. “Let’s hope that the stars of luck will smile favourably upon all of you for continuous good fortune and luck. Everyone should remember to smile and to be brave in facing all challenges for the coming year.”

SIX-MAN band An Honest Mistake is taking the independent music scene by storm with its catchy beats and funky lyrics.

Born in 2008 and thriving in 2009, these guys are kicking off to a fantastic start with their Voize Independent Music Award Best College Act.

At the awards night last Sunday, the minute the band started performing, cell phones and cameras started flashing as teens at The Mist in Bangsar, KL recorded their idols — Darren Teh (lead vocals/acoustic guitar and band frontman), Eve Oh (vocalist), Kevin Theng (the drummer, ooh la la), Leonard Chua (electric guitar) and Danny New (violinist) — singing “live”.

An Honest Mistake performed its hit single This Song Is So Random, I Don’t Know Why. Going with the night’s theme of ‘indiecent’, Teh climbed onto the DJ deck and then onto the speakers. Teens screamed. Rocking for sure.

Impulsively named by Teh, who heard the phrase while watching Malcolm In The Middle, the name reminds the band to stay true to themselves despite mistakes made and life paths chosen.

On the award, Teh says: “I feel ecstatic.”

New adds: “It’s a stepping stone for the band to go to greater heights. VIMA showcases the local talents in the indie scene and it should be as big as the MTV Music Awards. Or perhaps even bigger! It should be a festival showcasing Malaysian music. There are so many good bands and they deserve to be heard.”

These rockstars-in-the-making have big dreams. “We’ll go as far as it takes. We plan to write better songs and record more albums.

At the same time, we plan to be a brand –– merchandising from caps to shoes to T-shirts to belt buckles. Even toilet paper.”

An Honest Mistake has a strong following because of its unique sound.

Commonly described as a cross between pop punk, metal and hardcore rock (due to the varied listening tastes of the band members), An Honest Mistake creates variety in its music using high-octane violin riffs.

Energy infuses every note, and it’s infectious.

With plans to perform in Singapore and Thailand this year, Teh hopes that the VIMA award will “gain some recognition from the big names in the industry”.

An Honest Mistake hopes to release its first album in June, holding seven tracks. With lyrics that “revolve around life and love”, Teh promises that “every single song will have a hidden meaning behind a catchy tune”.

You can’t go wrong with An Honest Mistake. They rock.

VOICE Independent Music Awards 2010 (VIMA 2010)

January the 17th was going to be a very ominous day for me. With work looming over my head and a 4 hour meeting rolling around the corner, it didn’t look like I was in for much of a Sunday. I didn’t figure it was going to get much better when this non-clubber was invited to VIMA 2010 (VOICE Independent Music Awards 2010) at MIST Club… Or so I thought.

The evening started with a drag. I had opted to bring a close friend of mine, kiDChan, along with me for the night and she was taking forever to get ready. By the time we got to MIST Club, we were 30 minutes later than I had first planed. Thankfully, the Malaysian Deities of Everything Fashionably Late had seen it right for me to arrive before most of anybody else and the two of us sat outside the entrance for another half an hour or so beneath graying skies. (It would also be another hour or so before the rest of the night’s festivities began, but let’s end my rants here.)

The rest of the night…? Much, MUCH better.

The show started rolling around 8.11pm with an adrenaline pimping performance from Movemint, Kraft, MC Vandal, and Young Stunna, which followed up to a heated Hop-Rock showdown between the obscenity-spewing Kraft and thug-wears, Poseidon Connection. The pick-up was smooth and flawless – a surprise to me given the night’s bumpy beginning – leading to the night’s glamorously inde-cent MCs, C. Loco (former member of Poetic Ammo, oh YEAaa!!!), Adrea Abdullah and Moe Nasrul. (And I’m not joking about the “Moe” XD)

I and kiDChan had started off thinking of watching from the VIP lounge, but with a limited view of the stage below, we opted for a nice sitting corner next to the stairs (leading to the lounge upstairs).

Interestingly enough, the small standing space we occupied quickly turned into the best spot to meet up and congratulate the artists as they made their way from and to the stage. We got to shake hands with the guys from Benchmarx (which are AWESOME btw~ >D), Kraft, Nor (the lead singer of Hujan, which FYI, happens to know kiDChan as well!), An Honest Mistake and Andrew LD (which happens to be acquaintances with my girlfriend, proving once and for all that it IS a small world after all).

The best parts for me were undoubtly the live performances. With many of the winners bringing the best they have to offer to the stage (including C. Loco’s debuting single which was A-W-E-S-O-M-E!), added with an unexpected dance showcase from Animax, the night was simply fantastic.

Sadly, the club’s dim lighting was brutal on my shots, and as I may to capture the night’s many awesome performances, I was left with many blurry pictures. (that look strangely nice in an artistic sorta way… =S)

Bad pictures aside, the bigger downer were really the crowd's many luke-warm responses towards the performers’ many prompts; most obvious of which was when the frenzy-driven Darren Teh, the lead singer of An Honest Mistake, tried to drive the crowd to sing with him only to be met with the proverbial sound of one-hand clapping.

The awards themselves were given out without much trouble, with raging applause from the crowds who consisted of (mostly) members of the industry and media. The support and humor between artists were heart-warming, with many of them giving congratulatory shakes and hugs as the past each other on the main floor. One of the most humorous was probably when Nor went up to collect his prize only to steal the mic from the MCs to scream out Kanye’s infamous lines, “Imma gonna letcha finish, but Beyonce makes THE best music videos ever YO~!!”

Nevertheless, the night was fantastic. With wonderful performances from amazing artists, I went back with a few new friends to add to Facebook, a new outlook towards inde-music and a revived fandom towards Poetic Ammo. XD;;;

*PS: For those who stil haven't found out yet, VIMA is a Malaysian + Brunei inde-music awards show. 2010 is, sadly, the last one organized by Voize, but news is that Celcom will be picking up the role as organized next year. I'll be looking forward for it.

When One Leaves, Another One Comes

Hi guys. Some of you may know that last Sunday was the final show for our bassist Joel.
He has officially left the band due to personal reasons. Joel is the best bassist that we can ever have and we wish him all the best. We are down by 1 person going crazy on stage.

But there's good news. We have a new violinist. Our good friend Danny has just hopped on the bandwagon and he is just as crazy on stage! The video of last Sunday's performance will be up soon. I haven't had the time to put it up as I've been busy with work.

So, come to the show this Sunday at MIST because we have been awarded VIMA'S BEST COLLEGE ACT!

Malaysia Airlines will be organizing its very first Music, Charity, Friends MAS Touchdown @ Skypark Terminal SAAS Airport indie concert and charity bazaar on 9 January 2010. What started off in 2008 as an internal employee driven charity jumble sale at SZB has now grown to include singer song artistes from the local indie music scene and will now be opened to the public.

In collaboration with Skypark Terminal SAAS Airport and Go International Group, the conceptualiser of the Indie Youth Fest 2009 which showcases talents from KL, Malaysia Airlines will present a concert by popular indie bands and singer song writers such as Liyana Fizi, Rashdan Harith, Ady Suwardy, Najwa and Pesawat. During the open mic session, our very own band from MAS, reaXions will perform along side others from the local indie scene.

These artistes have all agreed to be part of this event out of good will to draw in the crowd. We are also in partnership with Bijou Bazaar who will pool together a great base of exciting bazaar vendors. Proceeds from the MAS Touchdown sale will be directed to Women’s Aid Organisation, Bandar Harapan Organic Farm, Food Bank for the Poor.
